Creating Signature Booklets from QuarkXPress 7/OS X

Option 1 – Printing Directly from QuarkXPress

  1. Create your 8 ½ x 11" document in QuarkXPress.

    Note 1: Do not select Facing Pages in your layout setup.

    Note 2: Before you begin composing your document, choose your target printer. If it's a grayscale printer, use grayscale elements in your document to avoid pattern dithering (fishscale-like patterns) on your printed document.
  2. In the Page Layout Tool,
    drag the last page up to the left of page 1;
    drag the new last page to the right of page 2;
    drag the new last page to the left of page 3;
    drag the new lasst page to the right of page 4...
    continuing the pattern until the Page Layout Tool shows all pages in pairs.
  3. On the menu bar click on File to open a menu list.
  4. On the menu list click on Print to open the print dialog box.
  5. With Device highlighted in the print dialog box, select your target printer, its PPD usLetter paper size, and your target printer's resolution in dpi.
  6. With Pages highlighted in the print dialog box, select portrait orientation and place a checkmark in Include Blank Pages if desired.
  7. With Colors highlighted in the print dialog box, select your target printer's color space in the Setup field, and select Printer in the Halftones field.
  8. With Fonts highlighted in the print dialog box, place a checkmark in the Select All checkbox.
  9. Click on the [Printer...] button to open a caution box and click on the [OK] button to open the Apple LaserWriter (native OS X) print dialog box.
  10. Make sure your target printer appears in the Printer field;
    Place a checkmark in the Collated checkbox;
    Click on Copies & Pages to open a menu list; and
    Click on Layout in the menu list to view the Apple LaserWriter Layout dialog box.
  11. In the Layout dialog box,
    Select 2 pages per sheet;
    Select Two-Sided: Short-edged binding;
    Click on Layout to open a menu list; and
    Click on Xerox Features to view Xerox Features: Paper / Output options.
  12. Click on Paper / Output to open a menu list;
    Click on Layout to open the Xerox Features: Layout dialog box.
  13. In the Xerox Features: Layout dialog box, place a checkmark in the Page Layout Options: Force New Paper Size checkbox;
    Click on Printer Default... to open a menu list;
    Click on Tabloid (11 x 17") to select the size of paper on which your job will be printed;
    Click on Layout to view the Xerox Features menu list;
    Click on Paper / Output to open the Xerox Features: Paper / Output dialog box.
  14. Select 2 Sided Print: 2 Sided Print, Flip on Short Edge;
    Select Finishing Summary: Select Finishing... to open a menu list;
    Select Booklet Creation... to open a Booklet Creation dialog box;
    Select Booklet Finishing: Booklet Fold and Staple;
    Select Booklet Layout: None; and
    Click on the [OK] button to close the Booklet Creation dialog box and to return you to the Paper / Output dialog box, back to the QuarkXPress print dialog box.
  15. Click on Print to send the job to your printer.

Option 2 – Printing as a PDF

  1. Export the document from QuarkXPress as a PDF, embedding fonts, using the color space appropriate to the target printer.
  2. Click here for instructions to send the PDF to your printer as a saddle-stitched signature booklet.
